Convert 4K to 1080p on a Mac — free, no install
Apple Silicon Macs decode and encode video in hardware, and modern browsers expose that through WebCodecs. havenConverter uses it directly, so a 4K→1080p conversion runs at or above real time with no app to install. Nothing is uploaded: the file is read from your disk, processed in the browser tab and saved back to your device.
Steps
- Open the studio in Safari, Chrome or Edge on the Mac.
- Drop the 4K file (MP4/MOV, H.264 or HEVC from an iPhone or camera).
- Resolution: 1080p. Codec: H.264 for maximum compatibility, or HEVC to keep the file smaller.
- Export. Watch the badge — “HW” means the Mac’s media engine did the decode and encode.
HEVC from iPhone
iPhone footage is usually HEVC (H.265). Safari decodes it natively; Chrome does on Apple Silicon too. If a browser lacks an HEVC decoder, havenConverter tells you before export and routes the job to the CPU engine instead.
Big files
Multi-gigabyte sources are normal. Output streams to disk as it is produced, so memory stays flat; if you choose “save to file” the browser writes straight to the destination file.
Frequently asked questions
- Is quality lost?
- Downscaling always discards detail, but the scaler runs on the GPU with proper filtering and the encoder gets the full-quality frames, so 1080p output looks as good as a 1080p camera file.
- What about 60 fps?
- Frame rate is kept unless you lower it in the settings; you can also set 30 fps to halve the file size.
