● Files never leave your device Convert MP4 to AVI
AVI can’t be written by any browser-native video API, so havenConverter converts to AVI using a built-in ffmpeg.wasm (CPU) engine. It’s slower than the hardware path — we tell you so up front with a clear badge — but it produces a valid, VLC-friendly AVI file.
Everything happens in this browser tab on your own device — your video is never uploaded to a server, so even multi-gigabyte files stay private. The ffmpeg engine is downloaded once (and cached) only when you actually need it, so it never slows down the rest of the app.
How to
- Add your MP4. Drop your MP4 into havenConverter.
- Choose AVI. Set the output container to AVI. The app will route the job to its CPU engine.
- Export. Export and save the AVI. Larger or longer clips take a while on CPU — that’s expected.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is AVI slower?
- No browser can mux AVI with hardware acceleration, so AVI uses a CPU/WASM engine (ffmpeg.wasm). The app labels these jobs honestly as CPU.
- Will the AVI play in VLC?
- Yes — output uses MPEG-4 video + MP2 audio, a widely compatible AVI combination.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. Even the AVI conversion is entirely local.
